Waitz Elementary turns bicycle donation into a reading initiative

Mission, Texas- When Waitz Elementary School was approached about receiving a donation of 30 bicycles from an area Academy store, campus staff immediately figured out a way to use that to help promote reading. They devised a reading challenge for students in grades 1-3 called “Read to Ride.”

To qualify for the Read to Ride raffle, students had one month to complete the challenge. The students had to record the title and quiz grade for each book they read within their reading level. Students had to pass the book quiz with at a 70% or higher to be able to list it on their challenge card. Students had from November 15 until December 15 to complete their books, quizzes, and turn in their challenge card.

The qualifying students then gathered together, with the bicycles on display, for the raffle drawing. Pictured are the students who won the Read to Ride raffle, along with representatives from the Academy store.
