December 21, 2016– Mission CISD held its second annual community service challenge that encouraged campuses district-wide to collect non-perishable food, with the top contributors earning a small prize. The generous contributions of students and staff totaled 47,110 items that were divided between the City of Mission Food Pantry and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Food Pantry to help local families in need.
The first-place schools were Waitz Elementary, Mission Junior High, and Mission High School; these schools will receive a banner and a special luncheon for the faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. In the elementary school category Leal Elementary placed second, and Bryan Elementary came in third. At the junior high level, R. Cantu Junior High placed second, and K. White Junior White came in third. At the high school level, Mission Collegiate High School placed second, and Roosevelt Alternative School came in third.
Individual classes also took a prize, with the first-place winners in each level winning an all-expense paid half-day bowling party and field trip for the students and teacher to Incredibowl in Mission; and for the teacher, a metal bench with choice of sports team or school logo and individual trophy, and a banner for the campus. The winning classrooms were Rene Garza’s classroom at Pearson Elementary, E. Santana’s classroom at R. Cantu Junior High School, and I. Becho’s classroom at Mission High School. At the elementary level, Monica Mendoza’s class at Leal Elementary came in second, and L. Villanueva’s class at Waitz Elementary came in third place. At the junior high level, N. Morales’ class and E. Guerra’s class, both at R. Cantu Junior High came in second and third, respectively. At the high school level, O. Saenz’ class came in second and M. Silva’s class came in third, both from Mission High School.
