High school students promote reading at junior high

The athletics department at Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) has been called upon by R. Cantu Junior High School (RCJH) to help promote reading at their school. R. Cantu Jr. High teacher, Isaac Guerrero reached out to several student athletes at VMHS to help promote reading and the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.

Each week a VMHS student athlete would be video recorded reading a book. That recording would then be played at RCJH during the campus enrichment period. The junior high students could then take the AR test for the book read to them via video. Following the reading, the VMHS student athlete then visits RCJH during the lunch period to talk to students about the book and take pictures with the top AR readers at RCJH. They also help send a positive message about reading to the junior high students.

VMHS student athletes who participated during the closing weeks of 2016 were: Jacob Guerrero (football), Johnny Martinez (football), Veronika Cantu (basketball), Jackie Howell (volleyball/basketball).

Mr. Guerrero says they will be evaluating the program before proceeding with more in the spring semester.
