Student efforts encourage city proclamations

Mission, Texas- The efforts on the behalf of animals, by students at three Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) schools were rewarded with proclamations passed by the Mission City Council and the Alton City Commission this week. Student groups from Cavazos Elementary School, Alton Memorial Junior High School (AMJH), and Mission Collegiate High School (MCHS) have been partnering with several community organizations to raise awareness about the treatment of animals and Animal Cruelty Prevention Awareness Month.

This joint effort of the student and community groups led to the Mission City Council and the Alton City Commission approving proclamations identifying April as Animal Cruelty Prevention Awareness Month in their communities. Not only did the groups involved have displays outside the council and commission meeting rooms prior to and during the meetings, students participated in the presentations at the Alton meeting.

The student groups involved have been: Cavazos Elementary School Destination Imagination Fableoso team; AMJH Teen Trendsetters, Junior Officers, Communities in Schools; MCHS Knights. Activities have included skit performances, a Pennies for Puppies campaign, awareness posters, guest speakers, sharing of information about the proper care for pets and animals, and signing of a pledge to report animal abuse to proper authorities if they see it.
