Five students from the 4th grade afterschool Advanced Academy had their original poems selected to be published in the Young American Poet Digest 2017 edition. The academy is sponsored by school librarian Jacqueline L. Milam.
Their poems were chosen by a panel of judges who only select the best poems based on creativity, age appropriateness, sensory/figurative language, structure, and poetic techniques. The purpose of the National Schools Project is to encourage student writing and provide an audience for student poetry. The students selected are especially excited to have their work published on the national level. The students, pictured from left, are: Kanani Beaver, Melanie Loredo, Joel Garcia, Denise Flores, and Laura Ramirez.
