MHS to receive Dallas Cowboys/Texas Lottery Funds for Fitness Grant

Mission, Texas- Officials at Mission High School have learned that their Physical Education (PE) courses will get a little extra help in the coming school year. They will be receiving a $2,500 Dallas Cowboys/Texas Lottery Funds for Fitness Grant. The grant is provided through a joint effort of the Texas Lottery, the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Campus officials will use the funds to help promote healthier lifestyles and exercise. They plan to purchase a certain number of pedometers, and a variety of sports equipment for indoor activities as a part of health and PE courses. This may include equipment for volleyball, basketball, kick ball, medicine balls, weighted jump ropes, kettle balls.

In their grant application, campus officials speak about how long-term participation in physical activity can improve cognitive performance in the classroom. They also address studies that have shown a strong link between physical fitness and cognitive fitness.

Officials hope to receive the grant in the next couple of weeks, which will allow for equipment purchasing arrangements to be made during the summer. The goal is to have the equipment for use, beginning this fall.
