Midkiff Elementary students pilot new H-E-B literacy program

Some second-grade students from Midkiff Elementary School helped pilot a new partnership initiative with the Palmhurst H-E-B. They kicked off what is being called H-E-B Literacy Nights. This is designed to provide elementary students a fun, interactive, and rewarding experience as a part of the store’s Read 3 initiative.

The store hosted the event in its literacy center where the students became the celebrated artists.

The students created sock puppets to act out selections from Louis Sachar’s Wayside School is falling Down.

The cast of characters from the event were: Sofia Serrano, the narrator; Ryan Guzman, delivery man; Arnold Ochoa, Luis the yard teacher; Angelina Garcia, Mrs. Jewls the classroom teacher; Jose Garza, Mac; Christian Ramon, John; Kiana Lopez, Allison; Chloe Sanchez, Jenny.

After the performance, the students received goodie bags with school supplies, a t-shirt, and books. Their teacher, Iliana Gomez received a $50 gift card to purchase supplies for the classroom.
