Statement regarding security steps today

The safety of students and staff at school is a top priority for Mission Consolidated Independent School (CISD) District. There was an incident this afternoon that impacted several of our schools. At the request of the Mission Police Department, we took the proactive step to secure Veterans Memorial High School this afternoon while the law enforcement officials investigated a reported threat involving that school. Students and staff were kept safe during the lockdown and our close working relationship with area law enforcement continues to be a strong tool in addressing issues of student safety.  Out of an abundance of caution, we also took the added step of securing Mims Elementary School and Midkiff Elementary School due to their proximity to VMHS. Palmhurst Police also requested that R. Cantu Jr. High secure themselves for a short time.

No criminal activity took place within the school grounds of any of the campuses. We will continue to work closely with our local law enforcement partners in our best efforts to keep all Mission CISD schools, safe places for learning.

We ask all parents to help us. Take this opportunity to speak with their children to reinforce the importance of reporting any information that could impact student safety. Reports can be made to campus administration or through our Be Alert Hotline, 1-206-406-6485, online through www.stayalert.info, or email at [email protected]. It is also very important that students be careful of what they share and post online. The spread of rumors can be troublesome. The correct course of action if anyone believes there is a threat of any sort, is to report it immediately so it can be investigated as quickly as possible.
