KWJH student advances to state MathCounts competition

Mission, Texas- K. White Jr. High School (KWJH) student, Alex Gonzalez has qualified for the MathCounts state competition to be held in late March in Austin, Texas. Gonzalez recently qualified during the MathCounts Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Chapter competition held at UTRGV.

The KWJH MathCounts team finished in third place in the team category at the RGV Chapter competition.

To make the KWJH team, students had to place in the top 10 on the school level competition. The 10 student are: Ricardo Ochoa, Adrian Ayala, Adrian Heredia, Jordan Hernandez, Melissa Salazar, Nicholas Alonzo, Alex Gonzalez, Bailey Hernandez, Kyle Pruneda, Jorge Salinas. Their team coach is Adrian Chapa.

MathCounts competition series is a national program providing students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers. The competition series has four levels of competition: school, chapter, state, national. Each level of competition is comprised of four rounds: sprint, target, team, countdown. Altogether, the rounds are designed to take about three hours to complete.

The sprint round focuses on speed and accuracy. The target round focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. The team round focuses on problem-solving and collaboration. The countdown round focuses on speed and accuracy.
