MHS and VMHS Theater Nominated for The Palms Theater Awards

The City of McAllen- Convention Center in partnership with the McAllen Performing Arts Center (MPAC) held the first Annual Hidalgo County High School Theater Awards breakfast on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. This organization’s mission is to foster the love of the arts locally by awarding recognition and offering support to high school theater communities in Hidalgo County.

 

“This is a beautiful auditorium and to have an event in celebration of the arts in this facility is just amazing,” said Ms. Cris Valdez, MCISD Interim Superintendent. “Our two high schools received several nominations and I look forward to the awards ceremony.”

 

Veterans Memorial High School theater production of “Fiddler on the Roof” received three nominations and they include: Best Ensemble, Best Sound Design and Best Actor in a Musical – Samuel Gonzalez.

 

Mission High School’s production of the “Lion King” also received three nominations which include: Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

 

Over 20 schools in the Rio Grande Valley were considered as nominees for each of the categories. MCISD walked away with a total of five nominations and theater students along with Theater Directors Mr. John Hodgson and Mr. Adrian Guerrero anxiously await the awards ceremony which is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2018.

 

The theater arts community along with City of McAllen-Convention Center and MPAC strive to enhance the awareness an importance of theater arts education. They also wanted to honor the hard work and commitment of the students by recognizing their accomplishments in high school theater.
