Castro Elementary had a Career Day on Friday, March 23, 2018 for 4th and 5th grade students that focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related fields. The campus counselor, Paola Rubio Ruiz, organized the event and had over a dozen businesses and/or organizations in attendance. This event exposes the students to a variety of careers in which they may be interested in pursuing in the future.
“My favorite presenter(s) are those that are representing the technology field because I love technology, I am interested in how microchips work and the parts that are used to create it,” said Lupita Del Valle, Castro Elementary 4th grade student. “I have been on a robotics team, the Raider Gumballs, since third grade and I really enjoy the building and programming that goes into creating robot.”
Students enjoyed going to the different booths to talk to the presenters about their career fields. They were mostly attracted to the booths that had demonstrations on how to create a microchip. The process starts with using a breadboard for prototyping the electronics to make sure everything functions correctly before permanently putting it on a microchip.
“I think my favorite booth has to be the technology, they told us about how to make apps,” said Isiah Casas, Castro Elementary 5th grade student. “Technology interests me very much, mainly the coding and app development.”
Castro Elementary would like to express their gratitude to all the businesses/organizations that participated in this event in which they were able to share specific details about their careers with their students.
The Career Day guests were STHS McAllen Medical Center, Rodeo Dental, Butterfly Center, Mission PD Forensics, Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance Lab, National Weather Service of Brownsville, Texas DPS Regional Crime Laboratory, VMHS HOSA, Geek Squad, Telemundo, Folio 3D Printer, Valley Technical Academy, Code RGV, VMHS Robotics, TEDSI Engineers, Texas Department of Transportation, UTRGV Electrical Engineering (Dr. Ben Ghalia), STC Technology Department (Esmeralda Adame), Lone Star National Bank, South Texas Federal Credit Union, HEB, and Careers Unlimited.
