Shame the Stars author visits with MHS students

Mission High School MAS (Mexican American Studies) class was treated to an author visit from Guadalupe Garcia McCall, author of Shame the Stars, a book they read as part of their STC Dual Enrollment class. This class is taught by MHS History teacher, Miss Victoria Rojas and the visit was extremely exciting for students.

Guadalupe Garcia McCall is a Pura Belpre winner and a William C. Morris Finalist. Her book is also both part of the Texas Library Association Spirit of Texas Reading Program High School (TLA SPOTHi) and TAYSHAS Book Lists.

“I was so excited when this book came out a in 2016 and knew it would be a great fit for Miss Rojas MAS class. I gave her a copy of the book last year and she read it and loved it as well,” stated Margarita Longoria, MHS Librarian. “She then gave it to the professor that co-teaches the class with her and they both agreed that it was a good, credible piece of Mexican literature and was perfect for the class.”

The MHS Library staff was able to secure a visit with Mrs. McCall on Monday, May 21st.  It is not often that students can say they were able to have an intimate visit with an author of a book they have read. It was a very unique experience and the class really enjoyed their visit.
