MHS and VMHS Bands earn a Division I at Pigskin

Mission CISD hosted the UIL 76th Annual Pigskin Jubilee at Tom Landry Stadium on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Not even the drizzle or the slight drop in temperature kept these bands from having stellar performances. A total of 10 bands were part of the lineup including VMHS and MHS.

Mission High School and Veterans Memorial High School Bands did exceptionally well. Both bands scored a Division I and MHS will be advancing to the Area competition. The last time that both bands scored a Division I was back in 2014, but the first time in history that both bands receive Division I’s from all three judges.

According to some of the judges in reference to Mission High School Band were quite impressed and had some great comments to share with them.

“One of the most musical groups of the day,” said Ronnie Rios, UIL Pigskin judge.

The judges were absolutely delighted with the Veterans Memorial High School Band performance and gave them some great feedback.

“Appreciate the sensitivity and control, really enjoyed the performance,” said Raul Rodriguez, UIL Pigskin judge.

This year only the 6A bands that received a Division I at Pigskin will be advancing to Area. This event has seen an increase bands throughout years and now high schools alternate each year depending on their classification. Mission High School Band is considered a 6A band and will be advancing to Area.

A total of 26 bands from various competitions throughout the Rio Grande Valley have now advanced to Area in Laredo, Texas. Out of the 26 bands, 10 of them will be selected to compete in the Finals. At the Finals, only five bands will advance to State competition.
