The Mission CISD Battle of the Bluebonnet Books

Mission, Texas- It is an annual literary battle between students in grades 3-5. The Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) Battle of the Bluebonnet Books was held Tuesday. The quiz-show style contest pits teams of students from the district’s elementary schools against each other. The winning team will represent the district at a similar book battle held by the Region One Education Service Center in the spring.

This year’s winning team is from Cantu Elementary School. The team members are: Erika Faz, Dantte Silva, Alexa Rodriguez.

Second place went to Cavazos Elementary School. Their team consisted of: Samuel Ibarra, Adrianna Cienega, Kayla Cirlos, Sergio Vargas.

Alton Elementary School took the third place trophy. Team members are: Nathan Mata, Kaelyn Cantu, Josue Santiago, Alec Hernandez.

This marks the 10th year for the district’s Book Battle. Mission CISD librarians have used the Texas Library Association’s Bluebonnet Book Awards program to help encourage elementary students to read a wide variety of books. The Bluebonnet Books consist of 20 different books, selected by a committee of librarians from the Texas Library Association.

This year, student contestants had an extra treat. They got to share a meal with noted local author, Shawn Elliot Russell, and received a signed copy of his book, “Be still, little tree, be still.” The winning team members also received individual trophies and a Kindle Fire.

The annual Mission CISD Battle of the Bluebonnet Books contest challenges the campus teams with answering several questions about several of the books on the Bluebonnet list. The concept was first introduced by, then Bryan Elementary School librarian, Charlyn Trussell, ten years ago.
