Lesson from the Polar Vortex

There is an adage relating to the Internet that basically indicates, once something is posted into cyberspace, it never truly goes away…even if attempts are made to delete it. The perfect example of this appeared during the recent cold snap, and caused some confusion regarding school schedules.

The phone screen shot seen here began to be circulated through text message and social media postings. Unfortunately, the screen shot from a TV station webstory was framed in a way that the time/date stamp of the original website posting was not visible. So, you would have no way of knowing this was from the spring of 2012.  Many people took this image as current news and did not actually go to the TV station’s website to see the whole story. If they had, then they would have realized this was a false image and that no school cancellations in the RGV had been made.

The big lesson for us all is; never trust an image/screen shot. Always look for the original source of information; whether it is the news media main website, our website, etc. There will always be those who try to play tricks with this type of information. We just have to be a little more saavy than the tricksters.

While Mission CISD does share schedule change information with the local media to help notify parents and the community of any cancellations or major schedule adjustments when needed, this is not our primary method of reaching you with information like this. Mission CISD will try to inform everyone in several ways in these types of events: SchoolMessenger mass calling system notifications, postings on the main district website (www.mcisd.net), the official district Facebook page and Twitter account.
